Summer Associate Check-In: Cami Hunter

Checking in with our summer associate, Cami Hunter, as she reaches the midway point of the summer.

  • What is a ‘day in the life’ for you at Lane & Waterman so far this summer?
    • A day in my life at Lane & Waterman this summer usually consists of researching different legal issues impacting the firm’s clients and assisting in drafting different legal documents. I have also had the opportunity to attend and observe mediations, depositions, and client meetings.
  • What area of the law are you most interested in?
    • I am particularly interested in employment and labor law, health law, estate planning, and other business and nonprofit formation and compliance issues.
  • What partners are you working with at a firm/what are you doing with them?
    • I have worked with many of the firm’s attorneys on different projects throughout the summer. To highlight a few, I have worked on estate planning research and drafting with Diane Puthoff and Jessica Kirkpatrick. I have done research relating to procedural and evidentiary questions in medical malpractice cases with Ian Russell and Abbey Furlong. I have also worked on ADA employment-related research projects for Judy Herrmann. I have had the opportunity to draft some pleadings for Maegan Gorham and Mike Byrne and a demand letter for Tim Gulbranson. Lastly, I have recently been working on a research project related to new Title IX regulations for Wendy Meyer. Overall, it’s been great to have a variety of projects as I have been able to learn a lot about many different areas of the law over the course of the summer.
  • What has been your favorite part of this experience so far?
    • My favorite part of this experience has been seeing the firm’s involvement in the Quad Cities community. I am originally from the Quad Cities so getting to be a part of a firm that is actively involved with the community has been a really rewarding experience. Additionally, getting to know all the attorneys through small group lunches and different social events throughout the summer has been fun.
  • What are you reading/listening to right now?
    • I am not currently reading anything, but I have been watching the newest season of The Bear that came out on Hulu!
  • Favorite thing to do/eat in the Quad Cities.
    • I have enjoyed working in Downtown Davenport and getting to try different lunch spots. I love walking across the street to Me & Billy and afternoon coffee runs at 392 Caffe. My favorite spot for happy hour and dinner in the QC area is hands down Monarch Kitchen & Bar! When it comes to fun things I’ve done this summer, I enjoyed attending the John Deere Classic and running along the river to prepare for the Bix at the end of July. It’s been great to embrace living in the Quad Cities area this summer.

The firm’s Summer Associate program offers law students practical legal experience following their first and second years of law school. During this program, Summer Associates engage in active client matters, and assist by, among other things, drafting briefs and transactional documents; participating in depositions, arbitrations, and mediation sessions; attending client meetings; and observing courtroom procedures.
