Meet Kyle B. Vancil
Kyle Vancil joined Lane & Waterman as an Associate in Fall 2025. His work sits at the intersection of technical subject matter and practical problem-solving, which is exactly what drew him to law in the first place.
In this introduction, Kyle shares how he made the leap from chemistry to law, what he loved most in law school, and why building a career in the Quad Cities matters to him.

From chemist to attorney
Before law school, Kyle worked as a chemist at Bayer during the early wave of the glyphosate trials. He found himself paying close attention to how complex science showed up in real legal claims and outcomes.
Around the same time, he was considering a career change. What energized him most was the overlap between complicated technical questions and complicated legal questions. Law felt like a natural next step because it paired that complexity with real human impact.
Favorite law school experience
Kyle’s favorite experience in law school was the technology law clinic. He valued the chance to do practical, client-centered work while still in school.
He also enjoyed working on issues that were genuinely new. In some cases, these were problems that barely existed a few years ago.
Why Lane & Waterman
For Kyle, staying local was a priority. He and his wife love their home and community in Muscatine, and they have family and close friends nearby.
Lane & Waterman offered a rare combination: building a career close to home while still doing meaningful, sophisticated legal work. It was the best way to grow professionally without giving up the life they have built personally.
What he’s most excited about
Kyle is excited to keep learning new areas of the law and use that growth to help people and businesses in the community.
He also likes the variety of the firm’s work. That range lets him see legal issues at many scales, from small businesses navigating intellectual property questions to larger organizations working through complex data privacy concerns.
Something you wouldn’t guess about Kyle
Kyle jokes that he has a hobby: collecting hobbies. Once something grabs his interest, he tends to dive in.
A few of his past and current pursuits include:
- Cheese making
- Scuba diving
- Vintage car restoration
- Competitive card games
- Building computers
- Beer brewing
- Renovating a Victorian house
Welcome, Kyle!
Kyle’s curiosity and technical background make him a strong fit for Lane & Waterman’s work with innovative businesses and complex questions. We are glad to have him on the team and look forward to the impact he will make for clients across Muscatine and the Quad Cities.
