One of the statements we often hear from start-ups is, “I don’t know what I don’t know.” With a new community partnership with COWORKQC, a coworking space in downtown Davenport, we hope to help shed new light on those unknowns. Once per month Lane & Waterman’s Kyle Day is holding office hours at the coworking space for its members, who are a mix of small business owners, freelancers, and remote employees, to ask general questions and explore what legal needs they might have.

Kelly Hancock, part owner at COWORKQC and a small business owner shared her enthusiasm with hosting Kyle at their space: “My conversation with Kyle helped me identify what I need to do in order to ensure my business is well-covered and my practices sound. I appreciated the reassurance and walked away with a list of what I can do next in order to continue to grow.”

In its first month, the office hours were met with strong interest from the coworking community. Over time, Kyle and COWORKQC’s owners hope more even more members will take advantage of face time with an attorney in their building.

“It can be intimidating to think about hiring a lawyer and our experience is that legal “checklists” are insufficient to assist small business owners with their legal issues, so we want to meet these entrepreneurs where they’re at and really understand what questions they have, “ Kyle commented. “Understanding that starting your business is the hardest part, we want to help make sure they can make the right decisions moving forward to continue to be successful. We believe working with an attorney should extend your knowledge, not serve as a substitute for it.”

COWORKQC sees this is a win-win. Says Leslie Klipsch, part-owner, “Our members benefit from one-on-one time with an attorney, and Lane & Waterman taps the pulse of what innovators and entrepreneurs are working on.”
