Biography

Maria Waterman graduated magna cum laude from Loras College in 1984 with a B.A. in Economics and obtained her Juris Doctorate with Distinction from the University of Iowa College of Law in 1987. Maria is licensed in Iowa and Illinois.

Maria worked for Lane & Waterman early in her career, becoming a partner in 1992. Maria operated a solo practice for years and rejoined Lane & Waterman as Of Counsel on June 1, 2026. Maria’s practice is focused on Family Law and Mediation. In her 39 years of practice, Maria has handled high conflict, high income, and other complex family law cases involving business evaluations, custody disputes, spousal support, and premarital agreements.

Maria resides in Pleasant Valley, Iowa with her husband, Iowa Supreme Court Justice Tom Waterman. They have four adult children and two grandchildren.
