Summer Associate Introduction: Kyle Kopf
The firm’s Summer Associate program offers law students practical legal experience following their first and second years of law school. During this program, Summer Associates engage in active client matters, and assist by, among other things, drafting briefs and transactional documents; participating in depositions, arbitration, and mediation sessions; attending client meetings; and observing courtroom procedures. We took the opportunity to speak with each associate to learn about their interests both within and beyond the legal field. Next up is Kyle Kopf.

- What inspired you to pursue a career in law?
- In high school I was on the debate team, and I coached debate for 5 years after high school. I’ve always been interested in government and majored in political science. Law school seemed like the logical next step.
- Was there a specific moment or experience that confirmed you were on the right path?
- There wasn’t just one moment, but every “ah-ha” epiphany, in class or in a practical experience has confirmed that I enjoy learning about the law. I’m glad that I chose a profession where I can continue learning new things.
- Tell us about a case you studied in law school that made a deep impact on you. Why did it resonate?
- Not a case, but a class: Basic Federal Income Taxation has been one of my favorite classes of law school. Before taking that class, I never thought I would enjoy tax law. That experience was a reminder to always try new things!
- What is the best piece of advice you’ve received?
- Prioritize your sleep.
- What is a non-legal hobby or interest you have that might surprise us?
- I love watching Minnesota Vikings football and enjoy playing chess.
- What’s a book, podcast, or documentary you’ve recently enjoyed — legal or not?
- I haven’t had time to read for fun lately, but the last book I remember enjoying is Fahrenheit 451.
- QUICK ROUND
- Favorite legal tv series or movie?
- Daredevil: Born Again (not focused on the law, but he is a lawyer!)
- Preferred study snack?
- Clio Greek Yogurt Bars. I went to Iowa for undergrad and for law school, so I still study at the undergraduate library. I get these bars from the café there every time I go!
- Most used legal jargon?
- I don’t use much legal jargon, but I have probably said “mens rea” once or twice!
- Favorite legal tv series or movie?
