Summer Associate Check-In: Sean Jarvis

Checking in with our summer associate, Sean Jarvis, as he reaches the midway point of the summer.

  • What is a ‘day in the life’ for you at Lane & Waterman so far this summer?
    • Every day consists of either working on a longer project or answering short term research questions. Overall, these have been rewarding because you start to see how your legal work affects the firm’s clients, and doing a good job directly relates to great outcomes.
  • What area of the law are you most interested in?
    • This summer I have done a lot of probate work and civil litigation work. Because of these experiences, I have developed quite the interest in these two practice areas.
  • What partners are you working with at a firm/what are you doing with them?
    • I have been able to work with a lot of attorneys at the firm. I have worked with Tim Gulbranson and Jessica Kirkpatrick on several probate matters; Ian Russell, David Waterman, and Grace Mangieri on a few litigation matters; and Diane Puthoff on some estate planning matters.
  • What has been your favorite part of this experience so far?
    • My favorite experience so far has been attending depositions and meeting clients. I enjoy the ability to begin making client connections and assisting them through often uncomfortable and difficult situations.
  • What are you reading/listening to right now?
    • I am reading a book titled Blockchain and the Law: The Rule of Code by Primavera De Filippi and Aaron Wright and listening to an MPRE audio study book during my morning commute.
  • Favorite thing to do/eat in the Quad Cities?
    • My favorite restaurant so far has been either Monarch or Half Nelson.

The firm’s Summer Associate program offers law students practical legal experience following their first and second years of law school. During this program, Summer Associates engage in active client matters, and assist by, among other things, drafting briefs and transactional documents; participating in depositions, arbitrations, and mediation sessions; attending client meetings; and observing courtroom procedures.
