Lane & Waterman is saddened by the loss of our former partner and long-time friend, Charles E. Miller, who practiced at Lane & Waterman from 1973 to 2010. Chuck joined Lane & Waterman after graduating, with distinction, from the University of Iowa College of Law in 1973. Prior to that he attended and graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy and Northwestern University (A.B., 1966). As a brilliant trial attorney, Chuck spent his 37-year career helping younger attorneys in the firm sharpen their trial skills. Chuck was a member of the Iowa Academy of Trial Lawyers, Iowa Defense Counsel Association (President, 1995-1996), International Association of Defense Counsel, and Dillon Inn of Court. He was proud of his service to his country in the United States Navy and Navy Reserve.

“To all those who knew Chuck, he could be a tough guy when he needed to be (or wanted to be) but was a softy on the inside. He cared deeply for his family – both personal family and his L&W family”, Dave Dettmann said of his long-time friend and of-counsel attorney.

We were fortunate to work with Chuck and he is fondly remembered by all. Though we mourn Chuck’s loss, we celebrate his well-lived life.
