Iowa Court of Appeals Affirms Favorable Decision For Lane & Waterman’s Client

Alex C. Barnett and Jenny L. Juehring successfully represented a landowner in the appeal of a decision finding that the landowner was a bona fide purchaser of farmland in Muscatine County.
On October 1, 2025, the Iowa Court of Appeals affirmed the district court’s summary judgment decision dismissing the plaintiff’s quiet title claim against Lane & Waterman’s client. The plaintiff, the highest bidder in an online auction for farmland, argued that a contract was formed when he received an email from the auction company congratulating him on his purchase. However, the court found that no contract was formed as the seller reserved the right to accept or reject bids, and he rejected the plaintiff’s bid and later sold the land to Lane & Waterman’s client.
